Rosie O’Donnell surprised fans after revealing that she secretly underwent a facelift earlier this year, admitting she felt “ashamed” of the decision.
The 64-year-old actress and comedian shared before-and-after photos of the procedure and published a lengthy text reflecting on guilt, aging, and self-esteem.
According to O’Donnell, she had always been against cosmetic surgery and even considered facelifts a “betrayal” of feminism and natural aging. Her change of opinion came after losing around 22 kg, which she said caused sagging skin on her face and neck.
In her Substack, the actress explained that she initially tried to accept the natural changes of aging, but began considering the procedure after feeling that “acceptance was starting to feel like a lie.”
The actress also revealed that her 13-year-old daughter, Clay, was against the surgery. Even so, she decided to move forward and underwent the facelift in January.
O’Donnell stated that she wanted subtle results that would still preserve her natural appearance. “I wanted to continue being myself, just a little less haunted,” she wrote.
The television host also commented on the high cost of the procedure, saying the surgery cost “more than any car” she had ever bought in her life. She admitted feeling uncomfortable with the financial privilege required to undergo that type of procedure.
Despite the initial guilt, O’Donnell said she was satisfied with the result and shared that almost no one noticed the change. “I didn’t disappear, I didn’t become another person — I just stopped arguing with the mirror. And maybe that’s enough,” she wrote.
